Sustainability & SDGs

Sustainable tourism in Egypt and the UN SDGs

Tourism is one of the few sectors the 2030 Agenda names directly — in Goal 8 on decent work, Goal 12 on responsible consumption and Goal 14 on the oceans. In Egypt it touches heritage that belongs to the world, coral reefs that draw divers from around the world, fragile deserts and scarce water.

The goals that matter for travel

Egypt's national framework

Egypt's Sustainable Development Strategy, Egypt Vision 2030, is the national plan that links the country's development goals to the SDGs; it is published by the Ministry of Planning. Protected areas are managed by the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency, and heritage sites by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

Beyond Egypt is an independent platform. It is not affiliated with, funded or endorsed by the United Nations, UN Tourism or any Egyptian ministry or authority.

For travellers

  • Hire licensed local guides and buy from makers directly.
  • Visit beyond the busiest sites and hours: Abydos, Dendera, Middle Egypt, the oases.
  • On reefs: no touching, no standing, no feeding; reef-safe sunscreen.
  • In the desert: stay on tracks, take all rubbish out, no souvenirs of fossils or stones.
  • Save water and energy: Egypt depends almost entirely on the Nile for its fresh water.
  • Ask before photographing people; dress respectfully at places of worship.

For tourism businesses

  • Publish what you do on water, energy and waste, with figures you can document.
  • Hire and train locally, including women and young people, and pay fairly.
  • Buy food and crafts from local producers.
  • Use mooring buoys, licensed vessels and park rules at sea; follow site rules on land.
  • Avoid unverified 'green' claims: say what you measure.

What Beyond Egypt does

  • Every place page lists its public sources and the date the text was checked.
  • Photographs are real, openly licensed and credited to their authors; illustrations are labelled.
  • We show no figures we cannot source, and missing data as 'not recorded', never zero.
  • We feature lesser-visited places alongside the famous ones.
  • The marketplace lists verified local companies; promoted listings are labelled.
