Alexandria
الإسكندرية
Mediterranean city of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Qaitbay Citadel and Graeco-Roman catacombs.
Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, Alexandria became the capital of Ptolemaic Egypt and a centre of learning around its famous Library and Lighthouse. Today it is Egypt's second city, a long Mediterranean seafront where the Citadel of Qaitbay stands on the site of the ancient Pharos.
