Saqqara & the Step Pyramid
سقارة وهرم زوسر المدرج
Djoser's Step Pyramid and a necropolis used across three thousand years.
Saqqara was the main burial ground of ancient Memphis for some three thousand years. Its centrepiece, the Step Pyramid of King Djoser (Third Dynasty), is regarded as the earliest large-scale cut-stone building, designed by the architect Imhotep. Around it lie Old Kingdom mastaba tombs with finely carved scenes of daily life, later pyramids whose chambers carry the Pyramid Texts, and the Serapeum's vast underground galleries.
