Greater Cairo
Historic Cairo & Khan el-Khalili
القاهرة التاريخية وخان الخليلي
Medieval mosques, workshops and bazaars of the UNESCO-listed historic city.
Historic Cairo, inscribed by UNESCO in 1979, is one of the world's great medieval Islamic cities. Founded as al-Qahira in the tenth century, it grew into a dense quarter of mosques, madrasas, mausoleums, caravanserais and city gates. Al-Muizz Street runs through its heart, past monuments of the Fatimid, Ayyubid, Mamluk and Ottoman periods, to Bab al-Futuh and Bab Zuweila, with the bazaar of Khan el-Khalili alongside.
